Texas Holdem is a game that's played with a standard deck of 52 cards. This game is so popular that you'll find it all over the world in casinos, cardrooms online and in home poker games. Texas Holdem can be played with as few as two players but you can also play with up to eleven player as well. The standard poker hand ranks apply in the game of Texas Holdem, like a flush will beat a straight, full house will beat a flush, etc... A round of Texas Holdem poker game play can be broken down into a couple of different categories. These consists of the Preflop, Deal, Flop, Turn, River & The Showdown. All of these have been outlined below. I've simplified things a bit to make it easier to understand the flow in a game of Texas Holdem Poker.

  • Preflop: Starting with the first to players to the immediate left of the dealer button two blinds which consist of a "Small Blind" and a "Big Blind" are placed in the pot by these two players. The blinds are put into the pot to start the action.

  • Deal: Each player is then dealt two cards face down. At this point the action will begin with the player to the left of the "Big Blind". Players can Fold, Bet, or Raise in the first round. Also in the first round players can bet once and raise three times and they cannot check as blinds are bets and they're not antes.

  • Flop: Three community cards are dealt onto the table face up. The cards in the flop are used by the players to form their best hand at this point in the betting round. After the flop there is a second round of betting where players will have the option to check, raise bet, or fold.

  • Turn: The dealer flips another card and places it along side the three cards dealt in the flop. Sometimes the turn card is also called fourth street. After the turn card is flipped another round of betting will commence.

  • River: This is the last card that is dealt onto the table to make a total of five community card on the table. The river card is also referred to fifth street at time. At this point the last round of betting will begin.

  • Showdown: At this point in a round of Texas Holdem the players who are left in the game show their cards starting from the player who bet first. Every player whose r left in the betting round uses their two cards and the five cards dealt face up by the dealer that reside in the center of the table to create the best hand (total of 5 cards). Any player can use either one of the two cards initially dealt to them or both cards to put together the best hand. So at this point once the each players two cards are revealed the winner will be determined. If two or more players tie the pot will be split among the players who tie in that particular round.
